Thesis/Dissertation Consultant

The Thesis/Dissertation Consultant reviews formatting requirements for all theses and dissertations prepared at UT Knoxville. These requirements must be met in order for theses and dissertations to be accepted by the university as a condition of graduation. Graduate students who are writing theses and dissertations should plan to meet with the consultant at least three or four times during the writing and revision process, including a Preliminary Review and Final Submittal. In particular, it is important to have the Consultant review your Approval Sheet before getting it signed.

HEADLINES

Second Deadline: If you have defended already and if you submit your final thesis or dissertation (with all required paperwork) by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23, you will be able to graduate in August, but without having to register for thesis or dissertation hours in the summer term. We will have a walk-in period the week of that deadline: May 19-May 23, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.

  • Please note that your official graduate date will be August; while we do not have a Hooding ceremony in August, you will be welcome to come to the December Hooding.

Thesis/Dissertation Workshops will be held Thursday, June 12, 5:30-7 p.m. and Friday, June 13, 9:30-11 a.m., in the Hodges Library Auditorium. (Friday's workshop is a repeat of Thursday's session; there is no need to attend both.) Powerpoint slides from the January 31/February 1 workshops are now online. In addition, OIT offers a series of related (and helpful workshops) on Electronic Theses/Dissertations, MSWord and more. Find them here.

New ways to get in touch! Click on the meebo instant-messaging box on the right of this page to send a message to the Thesis Consultant! You may also find us on MySpace and facebook (Group: Theses and Dissertations at the University of Tennessee).

They're all Electronic: As of now, dissertations must be submitted in electronic format. Please disregard any of the guidelines that state they are specifically for "paper" submittal (such as mirror margins). We'll cover submittal requirements at our Thesis/Dissertation Workshops each semester, and you can find more information on electronic theses and dissertations here. The Office of Information Technology offers a very helpful class in preparing electronic theses and dissertations, specifically how to distill a word processing document into the required .pdf format (including various tips to make that document more navigable and effective). Find infomation on the OIT workshops here!
