Exercise Science Program

The Exercise Science program is dedicated to promoting and integrating scientific research and education on the health benefits of exercise. Through a program of interdisciplinary graduate study, using both experimental and epidemiological methods, students gain a greater understanding of the role of exercise in the prevention of various cardiovascular, metabolic, and musculoskeletal disorders. In addition to primary faculty members, adjunct faculty provide expertise in the areas of sports medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, epidemiology, orthopedics and exercise psychology.

Master's Program

The M.S. program has a great deal of flexibility, which allows you to take courses that best suit your professional goals and interests. The M.S. program requires a minimum of 30 credit hours if you do a thesis, 32 credit hours if you do a project (see course requirements link below to learn more about the thesis and project options).

Doctoral Program

In order to apply for the Ph.D. program, students must have completed a Masters degree with substantial coursework in either Biomechanics/Sports Medicine or Exercise Physiology. They must also have taken the Graduate Record Exam. The Ph.D. program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville typically involves a 3-year program of study. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact one of the faculty members from either the Biomechanices/Sports Medicine or Exercise Physiology concentration to arrange for an interview on the UT campus.
