Biomechanics/Sports Medicine

The Biomechanics/Sports Medicine program area involves the study and applications of biomechanics, functional anatomy, and physiology to exercise and rehabilitation. This program area focuses on the mechanism, prevention, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries that arise in physical fitness and sport programs. The emphasis in courses taught in this area include biomechanics, applied biomechanics as well as medical considerations related to exercise and/or rehabilitation. Because there is dovetailing with the Exercise Physiology area, students take courses in this area as well.

Core Courses for All M.S. Students in Exercise Science

All M.S. students in Exercise Science must complete the following courses during their program of study:

ES 508 - Research in Exercise Science (3 cr)
ES 531 - Biomechanics (3 cr)
ES 533 - Exercise Physiology (3 cr) (Note: ES/BCMB 480 cannot be used)
ES 635 - Physical Activity and Positive Health (3 cr)
ES 601 - Research Seminar (1 cr) – taken two times
ES 500- Thesis (6 cr) or ES 501 - Special Project (3 cr)

NOTE: If you select the Thesis option you must take another statistics course approved by your advisor

Required Courses for the Biomechanics/Sports Medicine Concentration

The required courses for the Biomechanics/Sports Medicine M.S. concentration are listed below. The electives listed are ones which have been popular with students in the past. It is also possible that you may find other courses in the Graduate Catalog that are relevant to your specific interests; check with your advisor on these.

ES 513 - Biomechanics of Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (3 cr)
ES 581 - Biomechanics Instrumentation (3 cr)*

*Required only for students emphasizing Biomechanics (as opposed to Sports Medicine).

Electives:

ES 567 Exercise Testing and Prescription (3 cr)
ES 569 Clinical Exercise Physiology (3 cr)
ES 593 Directed Independent Study (1 - 3 credits, can be repeated)
SS 535 Health and Exercise Psychology
SS 533 - Psychology of Sport
ES&M 473 - Applied Biomechanics (3 cr)
ES 664 - Research Participation in Exercise Science (1-6)
ES 593 - Independent Study (1-3)

NOTE:

Exercise Science 593, 622, and 693 are the numbers used for independent study or research conducted outside of a formal classroom environment. Before registering for any of these numbers, you must first clear it with the faculty member with whom you will be working. If you and the faculty member with whom you are working decide that it is best to take this independent work for S/NC grading instead of a letter grade, it is imperative that you so indicate this when you formally register; if you do not so indicate this, the system defaults to a letter grade.
