NORIKO HORIGUCHI specializes in modern and contemporary Japanese literature and culture. The research for her book, Women and the Empire in Modern Japanese Literature was completed in 2007 while she was at the University of Tokyo (Tokyo daigaku) with a Visiting Scholarship. She has spoken about her book project in academic arenas such as the Annual Meetings of the Association for Asian Studies in New York and in San Diego, the Gender Colloquium and the Faculty Discussion Meeting of the Graduate School of Sociology at the University of Tokyo, the Image and Gender Research Group at Gakushuin University in Tokyo, and the Graduate Student Conference on East Asia at Columbia University. She has also given invited lectures to graduate students at Waseda University, Hosei University, and Josai University. Parts of her book have appeared in academic publications, including the peer-reviewed journals US-Japan Women's Journal (2005) and Rim (2008), and in Nihon eigashi sosho (Japanese film history series) vol.6. (Tokyo: Shinwasha, 2006).

She was awarded an M.A. and Ph.D. in Japanese Literature at the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. in American Literature at Millersville University, and a B.A. in English Literature at Kobe College (Kobe jogakuin daigaku). She has received numerous academic fellowships, grants, and awards, including the Visiting Scholarship from the University of Tokyo, a Research Travel Grant from the Association for Asian Studies Northeast Asia Council, a Professional Development and Research Award from the University of Tennessee, a Women's Studies Program Dissertation Fellowship from University of Pennsylvania, and the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Departmental Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. She has served as a reviewer for the US-Japan Women's Journal and Women's Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal and as a translator for Nihon joseishi kenkyu bunken mokuroku (Japanese women's history research bibliography) vol. 5, Tokyo daigaku daigaku shuppankai (University of Tokyo Press, expected in 2008).
