Declaring a Major

In order to be an officially declared major in History, there are a few steps you must take in addition to stating an interest during the application and orientation processes at the University of Tennessee.

First, you may not declare a history major until you have completed the prerequisite courses. (Go to Requirements for the History Major.)

Second, you may not declare a history major if you are on Academic Review. Once the Review has been cleared, consideration will be given.

If you have met the above requirements, you may declare a history major. Before you can be inscribed as a major, you MUST bring to the History Department a copy of your academic history (you do not need to provide the department with an official transcript.) Your academic history can be obtained in the Arts and Sciences Advising Center (1 Alumni Memorial Building). Simply tell someone at the advising center that you wish to declare a history major. He or she will give you the necessary form and a copy of your academic history. If you do not receive a copy of your academic history, ask for it. You will not be accepted as a major without it.

After obtaining a copy of your academic history, go to the History Department Office, located on the Sixth Floor of Dunford Hall, Room 2638. There you will be assigned an advisor in the department. You should schedule an appointment with your department advisor to discuss your program of study; you should not go to the Arts and Sciences Advising Center to be advised. The Department of History will forward the paperwork to the appropriate offices so that your new major will be officially entered into the University system.
