Early America, American Frontiers, Atlantic World

Bob Morrissey is a specialist in early American history and American frontiers, with a special emphasis on encounters and relations between Native American and European peoples and empires in the 17th and 18th centuries.  Among his specific areas of research are French Jesuit missionaries in the Great Lakes, French colonization in the Mississippi Valley, the early American fur trade, and Algonquian Indians of the Great Lakes in the 18th century.  He did his graduate work at Yale University, and wrote a dissertation entitled “Bottomlands and Borderlands: Empires and Identities in 18th Century Illinois Country,” which he is beginning now to revise for publication. 

Bob regularly presents his work at major conferences in the fields of early America, American frontiers, and imperial history.  Recent conference presentations include the Omohundro Institute for Early American History and Culture, 2004 and 2005; Western History Association Annual Meeting, 2005; Harvard University Conference on Empires and Imperial Control, 2004; The Filson Historical Society Conference on Ohio Valley History, 2003. 

Bob teaches courses at the University of Tennessee on subjects such as U.S. History to 1877, Colonial American history, Natives and Newcomers in Early America, and the American Revolution.
