As can be seen, the original photograph shows a larger view of the log cabin than does the somewhat cropped image used in Card 13-B. The original photo has the effect of making the young boy appear smaller and less significant. The cropped and enlarged print used by the TAT focuses the attention of the observer on the child and makes it easier to relate to the boy.
When the photograph was published by U.S.
Camera--1942 the
following caption note was added. "On special assignment for the Farm
Security Administration, Mrs. Wolcott photographed this boy as typical of
the isolation and meager living of the residents of
Breathitt County
(Kentucky)." (Maloney, 1941, p. 78)
