Wes Morgan
          Alvin M. Gentry, the "man across a cardtable," was born November 15, 1925. He served in the Navy during WWII and was the owner of a coal company and beer store on Maryville Pike. Ten years before his death he was involved in a tavern shooting and in 1959 he was shot in the hip after pulling a knife during a scuffle with a customer. He was shot and killed by George Holmes on November 11, 1962, during a shootout at Ab Franklin’s gambling place leaving a wife and seven children. He is buried in the U. S. National Cemetery.
