Training and Technical Services Office
The TTSO is responsible for most of the behind-the-scenes activity that keeps the department running.
Training
Police officers are required by state law to receive 40 hours of in-service training each year to maintain their certification. Through a program instituted by Chief Washington, the Department has 100% staffing on Tuesdays, allowing officers to attend training classes without affecting the number of officers on patrol. This program allows the officers to attend an eight-hour training session each month. Training takes place January-November this allows officers to receive 88 hours of training yearly or more than twice the state mandate.
Uniforms and Equipment
UTPD equips its officers with almost everything they will need to perform their duties as a police officer. From uniforms and ballistic vests to traffic flashlights and reflective vests, all of this equipment is purchased thru the TTSO. TTSO is also the test bed for new equipment. The UTPD is dedicated to insuring our officers are issued only the best.
Recently the TTSO undertook a massive project to outfit the Community Service Officer as well as the Communications Officers in a new uniform that shows their close ties to the patrol division.
Fleet Management
TTSO is responsible for purchasing and installing equipment in vehicles owned by the department. TTSO also designs and has applied the striping package for all department vehicles. All vehicle repairs, of a non-automotive nature are coordinated thru TTSO.
Communications Equipment
TTSO is responsible for managing and maintaining the department’s communications equipment thru a service contract with local radio shops. This equipment includes the department’s voice logging recorder, radio console and base stations, portable radios and vehicle-mounted mobiles.
In-Car Video Management
TTSO maintains all media (VHS and DVD) recorded by the department’s in-car video systems. All requests for copies of video by government entities, private parties or attorneys are handled in-house.
