Dr. John Rehder
Dr. John Rehder begins his forty-first year at Tennessee (as of Fall 2007). His research continues on the ongoing book, Tennessee’s Log Buildings: A Folk Tradition, for the Center for American Places. The project examines field and archival data on over 4,000 log buildings in more than 40 counties in Tennessee. Detailed case studies of four log building sites are featured in Knox, Sevier, Union, and Sumner Counties. Rehder’s 2004 book, Appalachian Folkways published by the John Hopkins University Press, won the prestigious Fred Kniffen Award from the Pioneer America Society. His 1999 book, Delta Sugar: Louisiana’s Vanishing Plantation Landscape, won the 2000 Abbott Lowell Cummings award as the best book on vernacular architecture awarded by the Vernacular Architecture Forum. In Union County, Tennessee, Rehder completed a narrative and field photographic collection for the“ Between Fences” project for Humanities Tennessee and the Smithsonian. He has recent articles published in The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture. He also serves on the editorial board for the University of Tennessee Press. Among his many interests are: golf, trout fishing, boating, hiking, photography, and his grandchildren.
