She is known most widely for her use of rainfall simulators to estimate rates of soil loss in Ecuadorian watersheds and to identify places particularly vulnerable to erosion. Harden teaches the department's introductory physical geography sequence plus advanced courses in water resources and land surface systems. At the graduate level, Harden teaches watershed dynamics and shares responsibility for the department's basic course in research design and field methods.
