The Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education offers programs for licensed teachers to earn a master's degree in education, do coursework necessary for licensure in additional areas, or be certified in urban education.

For licensed teachers who want to pursue a Master of Science degree in Education

Licensed teachers who want to obtain a Master of Science degree in education may apply to the Track 1 master's program with concentrations in a number of subject areas.

For teachers who want to add areas in which they are licensed to teach (additional endorsements)

The area of teaching for which the license is issued is the "endorsement." A person licensed to teach elementary grades one through eight has a license with an elementary endorsement. Once an initial license has been issued, additional endorsements can be added to that license with the completion of additional requirements.

Additional graduate work can be used to add endorsements. For a list of additional endorsement programs at UTK, see Additional Endorsement Areas.

The applicant who wishes to add these areas must complete an approved program and be recommended by the College. To be recommended for adding an endorsement in these areas, one must hold a valid Tennessee License with endorsement in the appropriate area (grades K-6, 7-12, or K-12). To obtain a Tennessee License with an endorsement in one of the following areas: School Counselor (Grades K-12), School Psychologist, or Speech and Hearing, the applicant must complete the approved program and be recommended by the College.
