Thesis/Dissertation Consultant

The Thesis/Dissertation Consultant reviews formatting requirements for all theses and dissertations prepared at UT Knoxville. These requirements must be met in order for theses and dissertations to be accepted by the university as a condition of graduation. Graduate students who are writing theses and dissertations should plan to meet with the consultant at least three or four times during the writing and revision process, including a Preliminary Review and Final Submittal. In particular, it is important to have the Consultant review your Approval Sheet before getting it signed.

HEADLINES

We have moved! The Graduate School is now located in 111 Student Services Bldg. (You can find a campus map here; select map grid 7 to focus in on our building.)

Summer workshop: Thesis/Dissertation Preparation Workshops will be held on June 4th and June 5th 2009 at Hodges Library Room no. 213. There's no need to preregister, and you don't need to come to both. Friday's session is a repeat of Thursday's session. If you are starting to write your thesis or dissertation, please consider coming! There'll be lots of opportunity to ask questions about your specific project and you will get some information that may save you time later on.

  • If you would like us to address your seminar, study group or class, we will be happy to do that. We can give a version of the full workshop, tailored to your program, or a more casual Q&A, or whatever you prefer. Contact us to set it up.

Spring and Summer Deadlines: Find important dates for upcoming semesters here. Also check the deadline calendar and add it in your Google Calendar.

They're all Electronic: All theses and dissertations must be submitted in electronic format. Please disregard any of the previously published guidelines that state they are specifically for "paper" submittal (such as mirror margins). We'll cover submittal requirements at our Thesis/Dissertation Workshops each semester, and you can find more information on electronic theses and dissertations here. The Office of Information Technology offers a very helpful class in preparing electronic theses and dissertations, specifically how to distill a word processing document into the required .pdf format (including various tips to make that document more navigable and effective). Find infomation on the OIT workshops here!

Editing services: As many of you know, you may not take theses or dissertations to the campus Writing Center. However, you certainly may hire an editor. Editors can help with formatting to meet university guidelines, as well as proofreading, spell-checking and the like. Contact us for a list of editors who can help you with your document.
