Raw material costs make up the largest portion of the total manufacturing costs of producing hardwood furniture, cabinets, and dimension, and defective parts severely affect producers’ margins and ultimately the companies’ competitiveness. The majority of rework and rejected parts are due to improper storage, handling, and control of environmental conditions that the lumber or parts are stored in. Millions of dollars and thousands of board feet of lumber are lost each year to manufacturing defects. Extension education focuses on increasing the industry’s knowledge of how environmental conditions, wood properties, handling, and processing effect wood products will reduce the material losses experienced by these companies and will allow Tennessee’s secondary wood industry to better utilize the resource and become more competitive.
