The increasing demand on hardwood timber in the region has caused an increasing competition for sawlogs thus increasing the cost of the raw material for hardwood sawmills. While log prices have continued to increase, lumber prices have not increased at the same rate, causing sawmill profit margins to decrease. The loss in profit margin requires that hardwood sawmills become more efficient in order to survive as competition increases. Extension activities focus on educational programming targeted at increasing knowledge of practices that will improve production efficiency and increase raw material utilization, increase the awareness of new methods of dealing with wood wastes, and value-added market opportunities.
