Transportation Safety Tips:
- Always park in lighted areas
- Always lock your vehicle
- Do not overwhelm yourself by trying to carry and load too much stuff
while you are traveling. This can distract you and cause you not to pay attention
to your surroundings.
- Make sure that your keys are easily accessible and secure. Otherwise,
they are an easy target for theft.
- Observe your vehicle before unlocking the door.
- Lock the door as soon as you are in the car.
- NEVER HITCHHIKE! You don't know kind of vicious people are out there.
- And visa versa. NEVER PICK UP A HITCHHIKER!
- Keep your vehicle in good repair to prevent random stopping on the
shoulder of roads.
- Do not let your gas tank get below a quarter of the tank.
- Always carry your insurance information in your car
- Record your VIN number, license plate information, and picture of your
car and keep it in a safe place other than in your car. This is in case your
car is stolen.
- Never leave your keys unattended.
- Keep your valuables in your car well hidden and out of sight.
- Carry a spare key. Stay away from using magnetic key boxes.
- Show courtesy
- avoid bumper stickers that may antagonize others
- avoid road rage
- do not encourage road rage
- do not create tension between you and other drivers for amusement.
- Travel on main streets
- If you see a disabled car on the side of the road, DO NOT STOP. But,
inform the police.
- If your car becomes disabled, do not get out. Lock all doors roll up
all windows and attach a white handkerchief on the window. Do not open any
doors for anyone. Ask politely to contact the police for you.
- Try to always bring a cell phone with you when traveling.
On Campus Safety
- Always keep your dorm room/apartment locked
- Do not walk anywhere by yourself
- Let someone know where you are going at all times.
- Always be aware of your surroundings

- Avoid dark areas.
- What to do while encountering harmful situations
- Around someone who fell ill or has injured themselves
- Do not touch them! You don't know how they may react if they are moved
- Dial 911
- If being robbed or witness a robbery
- Act cordial and comply with the person committing the robbery
- DO NOT TRY TO FIGHT THE PERSON
- Call the police as soon as possible
Although the University of Tennessee in Knoxville is a beautiful and great
place to live and go to school, it is still an open campus. Knoxville is a
"college town". But, be aware that students are not the only people
