[At its meeting on February 5, 2001, the Senate referred the following matters to appropriate committees for consideration.]

Proposals
for Consideration by the Senate
of Various Academic Policies

1. that the statement on page 47 of the 1999-2000 Undergraduate Catalog be enforced: "Student-athletes participating in intercollegiate sports under the provisions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Southeastern Conference must fulfill the NCAA academic progress requirements in addition to the University's academic continuation of eligibility to participate in intercollegiate sports" (emphasis added); to clarify the italicized clause, the following amendment should be considered: in addition to satisfying the University's honor codes and academic requirements for admission, retention, and graduation required of all students.
   
   
2. that each faculty member and/or department be allowed to treat all students equally regarding enforcement of attendance policies, the adjudication of acceptable disability intervention to enable access to classroom material, the determination of what constitutes acceptable tutorial intervention, and the freedom to work directly with the student rather than with an academic assistance advisor on matters of academic progress in a course.
   
   
3. that, to ensure the viability of number 1 above, no student is recruited or admitted without meeting the admission requirements of the university; because of the demands of athletic participation, it is unconscionable to pretend that an athlete who does not meet the standards of admission set for all students will have equal access to a UT education.
   
   
4. that all academic services, tutoring and advising, be placed under direct control of the Provost and centralized, either in a university learning center or within individual academic departments, for equal access by all students; the conflict of interest is too great to expect Athletic Department officials to have any involvement in academic instruction or advisement or to have academic affairs conducted within an Athletic Department facility.
   
   
5. that the university should adopt a written procedure for filing and adjudicating complaints by faculty and students who allege physical or verbal abuse by athletes or athletic department officials and require all athletes and athletic department officials to comply with the same judicial procedures as other members of the university.
