I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
My central research interest is the investigation of distributed information practices – the confluence of information, systems (digital or not), individuals, groups, organizations, standards, and processes. I take a social informatics approach and examine the distributed information practices of different kinds of communities: distributed software development organizations; biologists; digital library use by scientists, students, researchers, and information professionals; and management of a national-scale data communications network.
My teaching centers on social informatics, applied technology, and the role of information and technology in organizations (a.k.a. knowledge management).
I serve as faculty coordinator for the School of Information Science's undergraduate minor in Information Studies & Technology. This new minor focuses on the impact of information and information and communications technologies on society, individuals, and organizations. The minor complements majors in all fields of study including liberal arts and sciences, engineering, life sciences, commerce, business administration, education, and human ecology.
