Homework #10:

Use Table C.1 to answer the following questions:

1. For water, what fraction of the total thermal cross section is due to the oxygen?  What fraction of the absorption cross section?

2. a. What thickness of U238 would have the same penetration characteristics (macroscopic total times thickness) for thermal neutrons as 30 cm of water?  (Use 1 g/cc for water and 19 g/cc for U238). 
    b. How does the answer change if we use macroscopic (n,gamma) cross sections for the two materials instead?
