Johanna Stiebert is a German-New Zealander who came to Knoxville from Botswana in 2003. Her primary areas of expertise are the Hebrew language and Hebrew Bible. She has published two books: one on shame terminology and shame discourses in the Hebrew Bible (2002) and another on the exile in Babylon (2005). She has also written a number of shorter publications, some of which reflect her strong concern for human rights and the situation of the devastating HIV/AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Most recently she has ventured into research on the Dead Sea Scrolls, in particular a long text from this collection called 'The Thanksgiving Hymns.' Johanna Stiebert is a member of several academic Hebrew Bible societies, in the USA, as well as Great Britain and Africa. Her other interests include fund- and consciousness-raising for Amnesty International, hiking and travelling.
