What's the ratio of permit sales to actual spaces?

Commuter parking is 1.85 permits to 1 space. Non-Commuter parking is 1.20 permits to 1 space. Staff/Faculty parking is 1.20 permits to 1 space.

What do I do when a parent or friend comes to visit me on campus?

They must obtain a visitor permit from Parking Services or the Information Booth in Circle Park for specified areas on campus. An all day visitor permit is $5.00.

Do I need to register my car if I park on campus?

Yes. It is required that all vehicles operated by students and staff are registered with UT Parking Services. The registration tag is available at no cost, however it provides NO parking privileges on campus lots at any time. Vehicle registrations and parking permits are different. Only paid parking permits may park in campus lots.

Are there any public pay garages on campus?

Yes. The University Center garage and Locust Street garage, located near the conference center, offer public pay parking.

Are tickets written over mini-term, summer sessions, holidays, weekends and nights?

Yes. Citations are written throughout the entire year, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year if school is in session or not. A student must register a vehicle by the first day of class or within 72 hours of acquiring a vehicle later in the semester. A temporary permit is required during this 72 hour period.

What happens if I just park there for a minute, or a friend or teacher told me to park there?

If you are in doubt, contact Parking Services for the answer. A professor or friend may intend to be helpful, but will not be responsible for your citation. If you even stay for a minute or two, your vehicle is still as illegally parked as if it had been there all day.

Can I appeal a citation I don't think I should have received?

Yes. Students and Staff can appeal in written form or verbal (students only) to an appeals board. Oral appeals are held Monday - Thursday 3:30 - 4:15 by appointment and written appeals require a short form filled out and submitted to Parking Services. Student appeals are heard by a student board while staff appeals are heard by a staff board. A ticket must be appealed or paid within 14 days of issuance or a 50% late fee will be added. Citations can also be appealed online. Click HERE for the on-line appeal form.

What are some ways to keep from getting parking citations?

Always have your permit displayed. If your windshield is tinted at the top, tape it to the lower drivers side of the windshield. Always park between the white lines and don't block drives. Obey timed parking zones like Circle Park or loading zones. Finally, when in doubt, refer to your parking map for policy and location, or call Parking Services.

Have any fines changed in price?

Please refer to your current Traffic and Parking Regulations for fine structure as fines can change from year to year, or contact Parking Services. An up-to-date copy of the Traffic and Parking Regulations is always available HERE.

Is my permit transferable to another vehicle?

Yes. You may use your hang tag for another vehicle that you drive. Permits are not transferable from person to person.

How long can I stay at Circle Park?

Permits are issued at the information booth at the entrance to Circle Park. Permits last 45 minutes and are strictly enforced.

Is there any other way to get around campus besides my vehicle?

Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) provides a transportation service to the campus community. Their routes and times vary during the day so we suggest you visit their web site at www.RideTheT.com or obtain a brochure at the Parking Services Office. The East/West, Late Night, and T-Link routes are free with a UT ID. The Access Service is free to qualifying students with proper ID. For all others, a bus pass is available for $25.00 to UT students/staff. This pass provides unlimited ridership on any KAT route.

What happens if my permit is lost or stolen?

You must first contact the UTPD and report the incident. Then come to Parking Services to obtain a replacement permit. Cost for replacement is $15.00. If a lost or stolen permit is found on a campus vehicle, it will be towed and violator will be charged.

Does my permit expire on any certain date?

Yes. A permit purchased for an entire school year is valid for the fall and spring semesters. If you will attend classes or live on campus over summer, a summer permit is required. Please check the expiration date found on each permit. When your paid permit expires your registration also expires.

Can I purchase a permit for just the Fall Semester or can I get a refund on my permit if I leave school or don't need it anymore?

You must purchase the permit in full. However, you may return it after the Fall Semester for a partial refund. There are deadline dates that change each semester for receiving refunds. Typically in the fall we will give a full refund a week after permits have been on sale, two weeks with a withdrawal slip from school, and thereafter only a 1/2 refund is given. If you will graduate in December, your permit can be turned in for a refund of half price. Please contact Parking Services for deadline dates as dates are different each semester, but the deadline is typically one week after the Spring semester begins. Summer permits have similar 1/2 price refunds for summer permits returned between summer sessions. Permits may be returned to either Parking Service location.

Does UT have meter parking on campus?

No. The meters on campus are provided and enforced by the City of Knoxville. If you receive a citation at a meter, follow the directions given on the ticket.

What do I do for football and basketball games?

Many of the commuter and staff lots around the stadium, arena and surrounding areas are used for football and basketball parking. These lots can be accessed with a football or basketball permit only. Football and basketball maps are available at Parking Services designating what lots will and will not be used for athletic event parking.

Can I leave my car overnight in commuter lots?

No. A commuter permit is not valid overnight in commuter lots.

What are Parking Services operating hours, address and phone number?

We are open Monday - Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. in room 24 in the University Center and 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at 2121 Stephenson Drive. The phone number is 974-6031. TDD (Hearing Impaired) phone number is 974-6483. The mailing address is 2121 Stephenson Drive, Knoxville, TN 37996.

What do I do if I need to unload/load materials at a dorm, academic building, or other facility?

Students can come by Parking Services and get a 30 minute temporary unloading/loading permit for the location needed, based on space availability.

Can I purchase my permit before the announced sale date?

No. All permits go on sale on the announced date. Permits are purchased on a first come, first served basis. At certain times, permits are available for sale via online sales prior to in person sales.

How much does my permit cost?

The prices of all permits are located on our regulations page here.

What options do I have for citation payments?

You can either pay in person at one of the Parking Services Offices, the Parking Services website, by telephone with a debit/credit card, and possibly at Circle Park Online.

Can I purchase a permit for just the Spring Semester?

Yes, as long as there are permits available and you will not be able to purchase them until the last week of the Fall semester. The price for the Spring Semester permit will be half of the price for a Fall/Spring permit. See the regulations page for price information. Permits may be purchased at either PSO location.
