Dr. Cunningham received the A.B. degree from Erskine College and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Indiana University. He joined the faculty at UT in 1972.
Professor Cunningham' research and teaching interests focus on issues related to public administration and the politics of the Middle East. He has a good deal of experience teaching and doing research in that part of the world. From 1959-62, Professor Cunningham taught at Aleppo College in Aleppo, Syria. He returned to the Middle East in 1986 as a participant in the faculty exchange program at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan, and again in 1992 as a Fulbright Teacher/Scholar at Yarmouk University. He has also conducted research in Marrakech, Morocco, and in Jordan.
Professor Cunningham is the author of The Bank and the Bureau: Organizational Development in the Middle East, published by Praeger in 1988; he is co-author of a second book, Wasta: The Hidden Force in Middle East Society, published by Praeger in 1993.
Professor Cunningham gives generously of his time in sharing his academic expertise with the community through academic outreach and volunteers his time to several non-profit groups. His extraordinary contributions to public service were acknowledge with the Faculty Public Service Award presented to him by the College of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
