Muslims Begin to Observe Sacred Month of Ramadan
Knoxville News Sentinel |
November 16 (Friday) - Today, Peter
Sanders showed his remarkable slide-shows, Muslim in China and Unity
Through Diversity to the students of An-Noor Academy. The youth
gathered at the UC Crest Room to view the presentation. After the
presentation, Peter Sanders took many questions from the children.
Many showed interest in becoming photographers, others had questions about
his travels.
November 15 (Thursday) -
Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to God), today we had the main event of
the 'Unveiling Ignorance' series, Islam: Cult or Culture?.
Our speakers spoke to a full house. Many found themselves standing
at the back of the auditorium. The speakers, Dr. Umar Farooq
Abdallah from Chicago and Peter Sanders from London, were honored by
the Michael Kelley, City Attorney (on behalf of Mayor Victor Ashe).
They both received the keys to the city and became honorary citizens of
Knoxville. Peter Sanders then showed an amazing slideshow of
pictures from around the Muslim world. It broke the stereotype that
Muslims are all Arabs and in the Middle East. It showed the rich
cultural differences under the shade of Islam. Then Dr. Umar spoke on the
rich culture of Islam and its forgotten legacy. After the program
cultural refreshments were served to everyone's delight. We were
very fortunate to receive the opportunity to host such delightful
speakers, InshaAllah (God Willing) we will get a similar chance in the
future. Furthermore, tonight marked the beginning of Ramadan.
We were honored to spend the first day of Ramadan with Dr. Umar and Peter
Sanders.

November 6 (Tuesday) -
Today, Saimah Hameeduddin, Iffat Moinuddin, and Sadaf Shaukat spoke to the
West Knoxville Sertoma Club about Islam. Saimah first enlightened
the audience on who Allah is, what Islam is and means, and some basic
principles of Islam, such as tolerance and patience. Then, Iffat
expounded upon the issue of women in Islam. She eloquently spoke
about rights Muslim women had 1400 years ago and what the concept of
"hijab" is. Next, Sadaf explained how terrorism and
"jihad" are not and cannot be synonymous. Finally, the
floor was opened for questions, and a good 15 minutes was spent addressing
a wide spectrum of concerns from the need to overcome extremism
to if different color hijabs symbolized anything.

Knoxville's Diversity Can Make the Community Stronger
Knoxville News Sentinel |
November 2 (Friday) - Today the MSA
hosted a seminar at the I-House and a workshop at the UC with Dr. Rania
Masri. At the seminar the US Patriot Act was discussed. The
workshop was a general workshop on activism. Without even being
advertised in the Daily Beacon, both events were well attended. Dr.
Rania contains a wealth of knowledge and we only got a small slice.
InshaAllah [God willing] she will visit us again in Knoxville in the
future.
November 1 (Thursday) - Today's
lecture entitled Iraq Beyond Sadaam was a huge success. We
had 300 seats set-up, but the rush of people entering the room caused us
to ask for more seats. Just under 350 people attended this marvelous
event. Dr. Rania Masri gave a marvelous talk. We started with
fifteen minutes of a strong movie independently produced, then Dr. Rania
gave her talk and opened the floor to questions. The event was
nothing short of amazing. We thank the numerous organizations who
co-sponsored this event with us.

October 25 (Thursday) - My dear brothers and sisters, the hijab discussion today was *great!* Alhamdhulilah (All Praise be to Allah). TabarakAllah. It was awesome. It was a comfortable size group of people, around 11-12 non-Muslim women, and one guy. Maha, Sanjana, Farah, and I shared our thoughts and personal experiences of hijab. But the best part was hearing what the girls had to say. They were saying things like "I felt pretty and graceful in the hijab", "I looked and felt feminine", "It was liberating!", "It empowered me!" - oh my
goodness....we were about in tears...some of us actually were in tears. Furthermore, they said things like they acted differently, more polite, more conscious of their actions. Masha'Allah.. many want to do it every Friday.

Masha'Allah our experience at Sacred Heart Cathedral was amazing.
Maha, Iffat, Shafia, Sadaf Siddiqi, Tessa, and I each spoke briefly on
different topics. First, Iffat spoke on the innumerable
contributions Muslims have made to Western Civilization.
Next, Sadaf Siddiqi. talked about the concept of hijab and totally
moved the audience masha'Allah! Then I talked a little about Jihad
and Terrorism (I listened to Imam Zayd that morning). Then,
Maha talked about a day in the life of a Muslim in America, and added
her brilliant comments here and there :) Shafia was supposed to
talk about Islam's perception of the body and soul, but we ran
out of time. Sooo many people had questions, and you could see
the excitement on their faces. However, due to time
restrictions, we didn't get to answer them. Of course we gave them
our MSA website address :) Also, they want us to come back for a question/answer

Scarves Wrap-up UT Students' Solidarity
Knoxville News Sentinel |
October 19 (Friday) -
Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to God), today's event, Scarves for
Solidarity, was a huge success. Many visted the booths we had
set up on the UC plaza and Humanities plaza. There we gave out
scarves for those women who wanted to stand in solidarity with Muslim
women. With hate crimes abundantly spreading against Muslims because
of the terrible tragedy of 9/11, this was one of our most important
events. The Scarves for Solidarity event on campus was an
unprecedented success alhamdulillah (thank God). At 11 am, we ran
out of our 100 scarves that we ordered. We frantically were able to round
up about 30 more scarves to hand out. I just want to thank everyone who
participated. It meant SO MUCH to the Muslims on campus and especially the
Muslim sisters. Many of them cried tears of joy at the overwhelming
support of the campus community. The event was on 2 news channels, on the
front page of the Beacon, and on the front page of the Religion section of
the Sentinel on Saturday (thank you Jeanine!).
Some more exciting news. Shadab and
Jennifer got married this day. Insha'Allah they will have a blessed
life together. Our dua's are with you both.

than half non-Muslim. The three videos shown were: Hijab: An
Expression of My Soul, Islam: A Closer Look, and BBC's Faces of

Torchbearer Gives Feelings of Support, Peace at

Daily Beacon |
September 28 (Friday) -
Continuing Unity Week, the MSA held another 'Understanding Islam'
booth. This time we, with other student organizations, set-up on the
Humanities' Plaza. We thank all those who stopped by and those who
signed the banner of support.
September 27 (Thursday) - Today was
Day 1 of Unity Week. The Muslim Student Association along with SGA
Diversity Affairs and the International Student Association have
cosponsored Unity Week. We have gathered to tie that common bond of
understanding between us. With the recent events Islam has been even
more-so misconstrued in the media. For this reason we held an
'Understand Islam' boot on the UC Plaza. Furthermore, for the
terrorist acts that occurred in NY recently and all the terrorist activity
being carried out on innocent people all around the globe, the Muslim
Student Association, along with SGA Diversify Affairs, the International
Student Association, and Progressive Student Alliance held a candle light
vigil. We walked from the International House to the Torchbearer
showing respect to those oppressed around the globe.

The MSA Soccer Team lost 4-0 today in the Semifinal game. It was 1-0 at
Halftime but we couldn't pull off the tie or win. Looking back on a good
season, the MSA team went very far alhamdulillah. 90 soccer teams start
the season off and we were able to make it to the top 4. This is a big
accomplishment and even if we didn't win it all, it brought many brothers
together and we had a great time. Pictures and video clips from our games
will be on the website soon. Special thanks to all who played with the
team, to Nadeem who was patient in coaching us, and all the great fans.
September 24 (Monday) - The team we
were up against today in soccer decided to forfeit. Very unusual
indeed. Maybe our reputation of excellence is getting some
nervous. In our history we have never gotten past the Semi-finals.

our next game against a team of Graduate Students and we were again
victorious, winning 8 to 0.
September 20 (Thursday)
- Yesterday, the MSA held its first General Body Meeting of the semester
(finally!). It was a wonderful meeting coordinated by Sister Reem
Abdelrazek. She did a great job. We had about 75-80 people there, and
about 20-30% of them were non-Muslims! We released our calendar
[which you can download from Fall 2001 as a
pdf file], talked a little, had a short trivia game, and had great food.
This semester should be great for the MSA! Thanks to all who came to the
meeting last night.
Tonight's battle was heated. The battle was intense. Today's MSA
soccer game was nothing short of exhilarating. The game ended in a
tie, 3 to 3. We have made it to the play offs and now nothing can
stop us (I hope I don't eat my words).
