Paper: “Philagrafika: An International Festival for the Printed Image”

Philadelphia Print Collaborative presents Philagrafika, (working title), an international print festival that will premiere in Philadelphia, USA in 2009. The first of a city-wide quadrennial event, Philagrafika will celebrate the role of the printed image in shaping contemporary visual culture around the world. Philagrafika will attract a global audience to Philadelphia through a series of exhibitions and artist projects at The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Institute of Contemporary Art, The Fabric Workshop and Museum, The Print Center, The Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial, The Brandywine Workshop and additional sites in the city of Philadelphia.

From traditional artistic media to instantaneous digital transmission, artists everywhere are crossing the boundaries of creative disciplines and reconstituting the definition of printmaking through its integration with painting, sculpture, installation and web-based art. Philagrafika will create an international forum to investigate the significance of the printed image through these ground-breaking integrations. It will also showcase the Philadelphia resources that make the city an international center for innovation in the medium.

Founded in 2000, the Philadelphia Print Collaborative is a dynamic network of regional organizations and individuals that lend their expertise and support to produce diverse print initiatives with broad public exposure. PPC shares the excitement of John Ittmann, Curator of Prints at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, who recently remarked about Philagrafika, “It's thrilling to see the printed image in all its infinite variety take center stage as a creative force for artists everywhere."

TERESA JAYNES is the Director and Co-Founder of the Philadelphia Print Collaborative and a practicing artist, Jaynes has directed two regional print festivals, three community art projects, the publication of five invitational print portfolios, workshops, lectures, and numerous special events. Since 2000, Teresa Jaynes provides leadership to the staff, committees and board; facilitates individual and organizational partnerships; and supervises the overall financial and programmatic direction of the organization.
