Biomech Lab
The
University of Tennessee Sports Biomechanics Impact Research
Laboratory in the Department
of Industrial Engineering is involved in Human Factors and Human
Tolerance issues with emphasis on sports related protective products.
The lab's work on head injury mechanics and measurement methods
is recognized nationally and internationally. Much of this work
has lead to new standards for many types of headgear. It works closely
with other departments (including Athletics) to increase understanding
and education in the area of sports biomechanics.
The
Lab can test several types of personal protective products including
helmets and body padding. Research in the areas of head injury prevention
and sudden death in young athletes with "minor" chest
impact are current areas of effort. We work closely with national
standards agencies, the CPSC, Safety Equipment Institute and other
consumer and manufacturing groups. Products tested have ranged from
rodeo gear and the "extreme" sports to Pee Wee "T"
ball.
The
major academic areas that can benefited from our activities include
Human Factors, Electrical, Data Acquisition, Mechanical, Biomechanical,
Biomedical, and Materials Science Engineering. Other programs include
Physics, Athletics, Safety, Physical Therapy and related Medical
Programs. This type of cross-offer is unique in its ability to bring
seemingly unrelated disciplines together for the benefit of all.
The Sports Biomechanics Impact Research Laboratory already enjoys
a good relationship with UT Athletics.
The
Laboratory Director, P. Dave Halstead, received 2001 Merit Award
from the American Society for Testing and Materials for his contributions
to standards activities, and for distinguished service and leadership
in the development of safety standards for head and body protections.
His guidance in developing Standards has led to minimizing injuries
and saving lives. His professional work includes research, tests
and review of data as part of the injury reduction efforts of The
University of Tennessee. Dave has been an active ASTM member for
many years and works on a number of subcommittees.
Mission:
The mission
of the Sports Biomechanics Impact Research Laboratory is to provide
a practical hands-on environment for the teaching and expansion
of knowledge in several core-engineering disciplines in addition
to the focused study areas that include impact biomechanics in Sports.
