How competitive are UT scholarships? In the 2005-06 applicant pool, there were over 1000 freshmen applicants who had at least a 3.50 high school GPA and a 27 ACT (1230 SAT) score. Annually, recipients of our premiere four-year Chancellor's Scholarships average 3.96 high school GPA and a 32 ACT (1400 SAT) score. While the competition is very high, some scholarships have restrictive criteria and are awarded to students with lower profiles, as well as students with financial need. How do I apply for freshman scholarships? To be considered a priority applicant for all University of Tennessee scholarships, including the Chancellor's 4-year scholarships, all entering freshman must submit both the Entering Freshman Scholarship Application and the UT Admissions Application with all supporting documentation, postmarked by no later than November 1 the senior year in high school. All applications received by no later than February 1 will be reviewed for all university scholarships (general, college & departmental), excluding the Chancellor's and the McClanahan Scholarships. Am I eligible for scholarships after my first year? Yes, eligibility for scholarships continues throughout the college levels, and returning students are encouraged to reapply each year by no later than February 1. Many scholarships are renewable based on funds available and academic performance. The application for the 2005-06 school year for returning and transfer students can be printed from our scholarship page. How do I find out about the "unclaimed" scholarships I hear about? The majority of unclaimed scholarships are from external sources. Scholarships with very restrictive criteria are sometimes not awarded until future years. Please check our links page for external scholarship search options. If I am awarded a scholarship, how do I receive the funds? Funds from scholarship awards are applied to a student's tuition and other university charges each semester and any excess funds will be available 5 days after the start of each term. |
