Oldham Scholars may select any academic major. Scholarship assistance is $8,000 a year for four years, plus $1,500 stipend for travel support during the summer following the sophomore year. Each year, Oldham Scholars participate in an excursion to a major metropolitan area to attend cultural events. Oldham Scholars are encouraged to further develop their leadership abilities through involvement in campus and community activities. Logistical benefits include preregistration, library, computing, and housing priorities, peer mentoring, and honors dinners. The Oldham Scholarships were created in 1999 through a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Dortch Oldham of Nashville. Mr. Oldham is a retired publishing and marketing entrepreneur and president of Southwestern Publishing Company, a company that has provided summer employment opportunities to countless numbers of college students. Three of Mr. and Mrs. Oldham's sons, Dortch, Jr., Mark, and Daniel are graduates of The University of Tennessee. Mr. Oldham's interests and commitment to higher education are demonstrated through a similar scholarship program at his alma mater, the University of Richmond, by his distinguished service as a member of the University of Tennessee Development Council, and by the establishment of the Oldham Scholarships at UT. Oldham Scholars must be Tennessee residents.
