When will I receive an award letter, and what do I do with it once I have received it?

An award letter is produced in Financial Aid after this office receives a student's FAFSA information. The award letter indicates what type(s) and amount(s) of financial aid that is being offered to you for the 2005-06 academic year if you attend The University of Tennessee. Included with the award letter is an award acceptance form. Once the student has received the award letter and award acceptance form it is at this point that you must accept or decline the financial aid offer. You must let us know of your decision. To accept all the awards please list on the award acceptance form the names of each of the awards and the total amounts offered as they appear on your award letter. List the amount you accept for each term (Fall, Spring). If you do not want an award for a specific term, put a zero for that term. To decline all the awards place a zero on each line, after listing the award name and total offered amounts on the award acceptance form. To accept less than the full amount offered of a particular award fund write the name of the fund on the "Award Name" line, write the amount you want to accept from this fund for the Fall semester on the "Fall" line and the amount you want to accept for the Spring semester on the "Spring" line. Then, please complete the backside of the award acceptance form, sign and date it, and return it to our office within 21 days. Student aid cannot be disbursed until a signed Award Acceptance Form is returned to the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.

How will I receive my aid?

Signing your Award Letter authorizes use of financial aid funds for payment toward tuition and fees. Funds will not be transferred to any VOLXpress account unless a Confirmation of Attendance Form has been received by the Office of the Bursar. Funds remaining after tuition and fees are paid will be mailed/disbursed to students. It is your responsibility to pay all other outstanding debts including emergency loans. You must be enrolled for the minimum hours required for each program (half-time for most programs, but some require full-time) at the same time payment is made for the semester. If you withdraw or are administratively withdrawn for whatever reason and fall below the necessary course load at the time payment is made for the semester, your aid will automatically be canceled and all payments voided.

What if I need to withdraw from a class or the University?

If you decide to withdraw after the beginning of the term, you should contact this office to determine how your financial aid will be affected. You may have to repay all or part of your aid, depending on the date of your withdrawal. Refer to your class schedule for more information on dropped classes and refunding for students receiving financial assistance. Failure or not attending classes does not cancel your enrollment. In addition to contacting the UT Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships, we advise you speak to the UT Registrar's & Bursar's offices regarding a withdrawal.

How do I apply for summer financial aid?

The Award Letter reflects awards for Fall and Spring only. If you met the Summer financial aid request form deadline (April 1,), you will be considered for aid for the Summer 2001 semester. Be aware that funds are very limited during the Summer semester, and meeting the deadline does not guarantee you an award for the Summer. If awarded, a separate Summer Award Letter will be mailed to you during the Spring semester.

What is the Confirmation of Attendance Form?

You are required to notify the Bursar's Office of each semester of your status as a student, by signing and returning the Confirmation of Attendance Form on your VOLXpress statement even if no payment is due. Follow the instructions that are on your VOLXpress statement or contact the Bursar's Office at (865) 974-4495 if you have any questions about your enrollment status. IF YOU DO NOT RETURN YOUR CONFIRMATION OF ATTENDANCE FORM YOUR CLASS SCHEDULE MAY BE CANCELED.
