EPA Pesticide Program Update from EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs 08/14/02 http://www.epa.gov/pesticides ************************************** IN THIS UPDATE: 1)WEST NILE VIRUS RESOURCES ************************************** With the current outbreak and interest in the West Nile Virus, the Environmental Protection reminds everyone about valuable sources of information on this and pesticide related topics: the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. NPIC provides objective, science-based information about pesticides -- including mosquito repellents and insecticides that are used in controlling mosquitoes. NPIC also provides information on federal, state, and local mosquito control programs. Additionally, the NPIC web site offers a West Nile Virus Resource Guide with information on West Nile Virus; contacts at local, state, and federal agencies; and maps and statistics. Visit NPIC on the Web at http://npic.orst.edu/ or contact NPIC via a toll-free telephone number 1-800-858-7378, or E-mail at npic@ace.orst.edu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has a comprehensive Web site about the West Nile Virus that provides many resources including preventive measures to follow and how to contact local and state authorities (http://www.cdc.gov/). Additionally, CDC offers a factsheet about the West Nile Virus in Spanish called "Virus del Nilo Occidental," which can be found on the CDC en Espa¤ol link (http://www.cdc.gov/spanish/) on the CDC main page. Whenever you use an insect repellent such as DEET or an insecticide, be sure to carefully read and follow the manufacturer's DIRECTIONS FOR USE, as printed on the pesticide product label. If you have health-related questions or concerns about insect repellents or insecticide products used to control mosquitoes in and around the home, contact NPIC. For other information about pesticides used to control mosquitoes, visit the Environmental Protection Agency's website at http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/factsheets/skeeters.htm ************************************** For general questions on pesticides and pesticide poisoning prevention, contact the National Pesticide Information Center(NPIC), toll-free, at: 1-800-858-7378, by E-mail at npic@ace.orst.edu, or by visiting their website at: http://npic.orst.edu For information about ongoing activities in the Office of Pesticide Programs, visit our homepage at: http://www.epa.gov/pesticides Or call or write us directly at: Communication Services Branch Office of Pesticide Programs (7506C) US Environmental Protection Agency Ariel Rios Building 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20004-2403 703-305-5017
