After receiving my Ph.D. in social welfare from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1993, I spent two years backpacking across Africa and Southeast Asia. I then completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in clinical psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. After my post-doctoral fellowship, I was employed as a behavioral scientist at the National Health and Medical Research Center's National Breast Cancer Center in Sydney, Australia for one year. Following this position, I began my academic career as a lecturer in social work for two years at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and then obtained my current position as an assistant professor in the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee.
