Summer Term 2003 Second Session


On campus study is followed by travel to academies, museums, artist studios, theatres and architectural sites in the Slovak Republic, Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary. The Central/Eastern European program on artistic developments in the context of social and political changes of the Twentieth Century is based in Bratislava, Slovakia. The program includes visits to the capitals Prague, Budapest and Vienna. M. 7 to W. 10 July 2002 Course Introduction, Orientation, Web Site Connection. Cultural and Historical Perspective: Geography, History, Religion, Politics, Sciences, Visual Arts, Architecture, and Theatre. Online communication between interdisciplinary students and faculty participants here and in Europe. UTK Campus: lectures by invited interdisciplinary faculty and course instructors.

Arrival in Vienna, bus transfer to Bratislava. Lodging and orientation in Bratislava.

Guided tour of the city by Professor of Architecture and Member of the Slovak   Parliament Stefan Slachta.
Visit to the Castle Museum, evening performance.

Su. 13
Free day and evening dinner with Slovak faculty and students.

M. 14 to Tu. 15
Lectures on the city, region, history of cultural institutions, universities, democracy   civil society.
Visits to the Academy of Fine Arts, Academy of Music and Slovak Technical   University.
Lectures by Professor of Painting Daniel Fischer, Professor of Stage Design   Milan Corba and Professor of Architecture Peter Gal.
Visits to the National Gallery, Slovak National Museum, private galleries, evening   theatre and concerts.

W. 16 to F. 18
Bus transfer to Prague for three-day two-night excursion.
Lodging and orientation.
Architecture tour of the city, Castle tour with the Strahov Monastery, Baroque   Library and the National Gallery.
Walking tour of the Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock, and the Jewish   Cemetery.
Lectures by Professor of Stage Design Jaroslav Malina and Professor of   Architecture Petr Urlich.
Visits to the Museum of Applied Arts, Cubist and Functionalist houses and to the   Villa Mueller designed by Adolf Loos.
Attendance of evening performances at the New Scene of the National Theatre   and Theatre on the Balustrade.
On the way back to Bratislava stop in the city of Brno for a visit of the Villa   Tugendhat designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
Return to Bratislava.

Visit of the studio of painter Rudolf Sikora.
Visit of the studio of sculptor Andrej Rudavsky.
Evening reception for Slovak students and faculty.

Free day and an evening performance.

Bus transfer to Budapest for three-day two-night excursion.
Lodging and orientation.
Architecture tour of the city conducted and with a lecture by Professor of   Architecture Tamas Pinter.
Visits to the Castle, National Gallery, Museum of Decorative Arts.
Visits of the architectural offices of Jozsef Finta, Gyorgy Halmos / Judit Tihanyi
  and Imre Makovecz.
In the evening attendance of theatre and music performances.
Return to Bratislava.

Visit of the architectural office of Bogar, Kralik, Urban.
Visit of the studio of painter Ondrej Zimka.

F.25 - Sa. 26
Day trips by bus to Vienna with return to Bratislava each evening.
  In these two days take part in an architecture tour of the city; visit the National   Gallery, Castle of Schoenbrun, St. Stephen Cathedral, Public Housing by the   painter Hundertwasser, the Secession House. Lecture by Professor of Theater   Annette Beaufays. Visit of the architecture office of Coop Himmelblau.

Free day for individual study and visual and written journal.
Evening performance.

M. 28
Free morning and afternoon wrap-up and presentations with a reception for   participating Slovak students and faculty.

Tu. 29
Individual student research conclusions and making a record of the exchange of ideas and experiences on the web site.

W. 30
Group bus transfer to Vienna Airport for travel back to the US.
Air departure Vienna to Knoxville.
Same day arrival home to Knoxville.

M. 11
The submission deadline of the student coursework, including the hard copy journals and research term papers in the UT Department of Art office.
