Instructions for Sample Submission
Please refer to the list of optimum sample sizes before
collecting samples in the
field. In addition to collecting large enough samples for conventional dating,
the laboratory requests as much information about the sample provenance as
possible. It may be useful for new researchers to refer to our
Sample Submission Form (pdf) before collecting samples from the field. This form should
also accompany all samples submitted to the laboratory.
In most cases, normal handling of the samples will not
cause contamination, however, the samples should be protected from excess
exposure to sources of extraneous carbon. Wood samples may be wrapped in
aluminum foil and labeled with appropriate sample identification. Care must be
taken when using aluminum foil for wrapping charcoal samples, as friable samples
may not survive transport.
We recommend that all researchers contact the
radiocarbon laboratory to discuss scheduling and cost
before submitting samples.
