Why Assistive Technology? The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Amendment of 1997 defines assistive technology as any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. It mandates that assistive technology be considered in the Individual Education Plans (IEP) of all children who have recognized disabilities.
